A COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE TO INSTALLING YOUR ELECTRIC COOKER

Installing an electric cooker may seem daunting, but with the right guidance, it can be a straightforward process. While it’s advisable to enlist the help of a qualified electrician in London, you can also undertake the installation yourself by following the steps outlined below.

PREPARATION BEFORE INSTALLATION

Before you begin the installation process, it’s crucial to gather the necessary materials and ensure you have the appropriate setup in place.

  • Heat-Resistant Cable: Choose a thick, heat-resistant cable suitable for your cooker model. Refer to the instruction manual or consult an expert if unsure.
  • Large Fuse and Isolating Switch: Invest in a robust fuse, preferably 13 amps or higher, and a visible double pole isolating switch. These components are essential for safely managing the power supply to your cooker.

SELECTING THE RIGHT ISOLATING SWITCH

Opt for a double pole isolating switch, designed for heavy-duty appliances like cookers and showers. This type of switch cuts off both the live and neutral wires, ensuring safe isolation of the appliance and preventing residual current shocks.

CIRCUITS AND CABLES

Your electric cooker should have its dedicated circuit to avoid overloading and potential hazards. Ensure the cooker’s control unit is positioned at least two meters away and not directly above the appliance. Use a thick cable capable of handling the cooker’s power requirements.

WIRING THE ELECTRIC COOKER

Begin by switching off the power supply at the control switch. Then, carefully insert the cable circuit into the control unit, ensuring the cable ends are properly stripped. Proceed to connect the earth, neutral, and live wires to their respective terminals in the cooker’s outlet.

INSTALLATION PROCESS

Lifting and positioning the oven may require assistance due to its size and weight. Locate the terminal outlet behind the cooker, usually covered by a removable plate. Connect the wires following the colour-coding (blue for neutral, yellow/green for earth, and brown for live), and securely tighten them.

Once the connections are secure, restore power from the control source, and reposition the oven. Congratulations, you’re now ready to cook up a storm with your newly installed electric cooker.
